Vanilla extract is an aged solution of vanilla beans soaked in alcohol and water and is the most common form of vanilla over the pricier whole beans. A lot of imitation vanilla is made from vanillin, something that does occur naturally in vanilla beans but most often is synthesized in a lab. It’s the difference between pure vanilla extract and vanilla flavoring. Sometimes, vanillin will find itself in something claiming to be pure.
